Abstract
In the treatment of cerebral vascular accident one of the major subjects concerns with the management of residual defect when the patient survives the initial episode. As yet no drug is known to be curativein the treatment of hemiplegia and so far main reliance, therefore, is laid on physical therapy alone.
In attempting to evaluate the effect of physical therapy authors made a clinical analysis on 50 patients who had received physical therapy more than10 times at the St. Mary¢¥s Hospital, Catholic Medical College over the past 21 months.
Following are the conclusions :
1. As a over-all figure improvement of the hemiplegia was noted in 50% following physical therapy.
2. Hemiplegia resulting from cerebral thrombosis showed higher rate of improvement than that following cerebral hemorrhage. 23 out of 35 patients made improvement in the former whereas only 2 out of14 patients improved in latter group.
3. Main adverse conditions in the physical therapy of hemiplegia were old age, mental deteriolation, coronary insufficiency. aphasia, severe hypertension, secondary infection, decubitus, lack of cooperationfrom the patient and his families and financial problem etc.
In the modern treatment of C. V. A. authors like to emphasize that one should give enough rehabilitation therapy so that the patient may be able to return to the usual social life rather than merely saving life from emergent situation.
